Matthew has been painting Jesus Hernandez, a friend who worked with him a couple of years ago.
Jesus fascinated Matthew because of his striking appearance, and he had been looking for an excuse to paint him for a while.
The relaunch of the National Portrait Gallery's prize "Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award" gave him the reason to approach Jesus.
The paintings shown here are all experiments in application, light, etc. Matthew is always keen to develop his approach and style.
Matthew believes an artist can have many 'styles' he doesn't need to feel pigeonholed.
